Ixtapa Beaches and Attractions

Playa del Palmar – This is Ixtapa’s main beach. It is located in front of the hotels on hotel row. There are many vendors selling their trinkets and souveniers along with vendors offering water sports. Many of the hotels on the ocean front also offer watersports.

Playa Quieta, Playa Linda – This beach is just a short taxi ride out of town. This is the beach where the tourists can catch small boats ( called pangas ) that will take tourists to Ixtapa island. This a very fun island where visitors can roam around and explore several small island beaches. The water is warm and good for swimming and snorkeling. The boats run a fairly regular schedule and cost about $5 for a round trip.

Playa la Madera - This is a small beach located across the bay. It can be reached by a small footpath from the base of the Playa Principal hotel. The beach can also be reached by taking a taxi just outside of town.

Playa la Ropa – A very attractive beach with relatively little people. The white sandy beach is just a half mile long but worth the taxi ride. There are plenty of places to rent water craft, jet skis, snorkeling gear. There are also a few smaller hotels and restaurants for the visitors.

Playa las Gatas – Originally got its name for the many Nuser Sharks that used to migrate here. The beach has a natural breakwater offshore that keeps the beach clam and good for swimming. The beach is close to Playa la Ropa beach. Pangas ( small water taxis and fishing boats ) will take visitors from this beach to other beaches.

Playa Principal – this is the main beach for the neighboring city of Zihuatanejo’s.
