Cancun Activities and Attractions

Mayan Ruins are a main attractions for visitors to Cancun and surrounding areas. There are a few small historical sites in the town. The larger and more extensive archeological sites include El Meco located just outside of town on the mainland. The more famous sites like Cobá and Muyil (Riviera) the small Polé (now Xcaret), and Kohunlich, Kinichná, Dzibanché, Oxtankah, Tulum, and Chacchoben are located south of Cancun. The ruins offer the visitors a great way to discover the ways of the Mayan people and many sites have cultural centers that provide a good commentary on the culture.

The famous Cancun beaches are also very popular. The beaches are clean, warm and generally calm. The weather along with the beaches is what makes Cancun famous.

Water Sports of all kinds can be found in the hotel zone. Many hotels offer water sport activities including kayaking, sailing, parasailing, jet skis, scuba diving and snorkeling. Swimming and sunbathing are also very popular activities. There are a few locations where tourist can swim with the dolphins.

Other land based activities including eco tours, horseback riding and jungle exploration is available just outside of town on the mainland. All of the vendors will arrange to pick you up and drop you off at your hotel. The jeep tours are especially nice as they are shorter and the visitors can expect to see many different kinds of birds, animals an plants of many varieties.

There are several good shopping areas in Cancun. There is a large shopping complex with hundreds of well known stores right in the middle of the hotel zone. Some of the smaller shop owners will expect you to haggle of prices. Many local crafts are available here. More shops are available in the city on the mainland. The prices here are cheaper and the visitors can negotiate better prices if you have the nerve.

Golf is also a very popular pastime. There are several world class golf courses on the mainland. Make sure to book your tee times early as they become full days in advance. For the more adventurous traveler, try the soccer or futbol games in the city.
