The Bahamas Airport and TransportationThere are two primary airports that serve The Bahamas. They are at the capital Nassau and Freeport. There is a good network of air transportation between the islands and is easy to island hop. All the major airlines have regular scheduled service to the larger airports. Taxi service is available to take tourists to and from the hotels and between locations on the islands. There is limited bus service in Nassau. There is not much need to rent a car unless the visitor wants to travel around an island. The roads are average but become rough and unpaved the farther from the cities you travel. Water taxis, mailboats and other scheduled yachts are ways to travel around the islands. The mailboats are the cheapest but may not be the most reliable. Tips and Other Travel InformationThe Bahamas is geared for boat travel. There are many ports and facilities for travelers with boats and yachts.Currency – The US dollar is accepted in every place of business. The official currency is the Bahamanian Dollar but the US dollar is commonly used. Electricity – The electricity is the same as in the US. There may be a few places where the outlets are older forms but all hotels have standard US outlets. Food Service – US tourists will have to get used to the slower paced service. The services is similar to the lifestyle of the Bahamas, slow and relaxed. Please be patient when ordering food both at fast food and sit in restaurants. Entry Requirements – US and European visitors require valid passport to enter the country. The off season – The summertime is the off season in the Bahamas. This is the best time to find reduced rates for many hotels. |
