Playa del Carmen mexico beach resorts Playa del Carmen is a smaller tourist resort located on the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. The city is 45 minutes by car south of Cancun and about an hour north of Tollum. Playa del Carmen is known for the turquoise water, clear beaches and small town feel. It is a great place to get away from the larger crowds of Cancun. The town originally started out as a small fishing village that started making money with a ferry service to the island of Cozumel just 12 miles offshore. Tourist quickly started staying in town as an escape from the crowds in Cancun.

There are many fine hotels in Playa del Carmen that offer a variety of services. There are several all-inclusive hotels that offer provides the tourist with three meals a day, tips and room rates. Most all of the hotels are less than three stories as the local government has passed building ordinances to keep the small town feel. Many of the all-inclusive resorts are four miles south of the town in a development called Playacar.

Playa del Carmen is known for the slow pace of live, the great scuba diving and snorkeling and especially the cenotes diving and swimming. Cenotes are large sinkholes filled with water that are usually exceptionally clear. Many of the Cenotes are several hundred feet deep with many types of plants and fish. There are many of these Cenotes in the vicinity of Playa del Carmen.

Other activities in Playa del Carmen include deep sea fishing, water sports and eco-tours. There are several great archeological sites within a few minutes travel from town. Most notable are the ruins in Xcaret. The eco theme park of Xel Ha is a great place for family outings.

The weather in Playa del Carmen is warm most of the year. The rainy season is from may through November. During this time, the tourist can expect a few downpours during the afternoon hours.
