Dominica is a small island nation in the Caribbean Sea. It lies south of Guadalupe and North of Martinique. The country is a single large island covered in tropical rain forest and rugged mountains. The island is home to many species of tropical birds, plants and many marine species. The island however does not have the excellent beaches as its neighboring islands as the rain forest extents to the ocean. There are beaches but they are limited.
Dominica is on e of the few Caribbean islands that has many natural rivers that originate from the rain forests. The island is surrounded by coral reefs making Dominica and excellent Scuba diving and snorkeling location. Eco tourism is a primary attraction to the islands. Fresh water lakes, boiling lakes ( from volcanic activity ), rivers, streams and many waterfalls make this island a true eco-tourism destination.
The weather in Dominica is warm and tropical. It rains almost every day due to the rain forests and high mountains. The mountains create updrafts from the trade winds that make rain clouds.
Dominica has several hotel options ranging from luxurious to the more budget minded. Many of the hotels are located outside of the towns in beautiful settings with stunning views. Other hotel options include eco oriented hotels that offer guests many types of hiking, exploring and adventure (think zip line ) tours and accommodations.
Dominica recently expanded the boat terminal in the capital that can accommodate cruise ships. Most of the inhabitants of Dominica work in agriculture primarily banana farming. Tourism is also a very important part of the economy but not as much as neighboring islands.
